Modern Change is a consultancy that helps build happy, productive and resilient organisations - the kind that will thrive as the world continues to change around them.

Drawing on our background as CEOs in the nonprofit digital space, we help progressive organisations build the culture, infrastructure and adaptability they need to stay impactful now and into the future.

Our services

We deliver strategy, coaching and change management across three areas:

Implementing AI

  • We’ll help you set your strategy for ethically using AI to improve efficiency, results and impact. We’ll also help you understand how to set your organisation up to become nimble and responsive to AI as it evolves.

  • AI is an immensely useful tool, but it can also cause harm if not used carefully. We’ll help you develop the understanding, policies and processes your team will need to keep you data safe and use AI ethically.

  • The AI tidal wave offers huge opportunities, but also comes with risks to jobs and organisational stability. We’ll help you implement a just, people-centred approach to leading your organisation through this change to ensure your staff, organisation and mission all benefit.

Empowering teams

  • If you’re going to empower your team to deliver your goals, first everyone needs to agree on what they are. Working collaboratively across teams to create buy-in, we’ll help you clarify your organisation’s goals and strategy and get everyone aligned behind your shared priorities.

  • We’ll partner with you to evolve your culture, workflows and structures, all co-created with your team to ensure everyone is bought in to the change. Our goal is to help you build a more strategically aligned, modern and nimble organisation that can deliver impact both now and into the future.

  • Our approach - and language - is deliberately different to traditional “digital transformation,” which often fails because it sees digital as an isolated area of technological change. Instead, we create organisations whose cultures, tools and structures are all set up to thrive in the digital age - and the coming AI age too.

Building org. resilience

  • Done right, organisational values are a crucial tool for uniting your team and guiding day-to-day decision making. We’ll help you and your staff articulate a set of useful values that won’t just gather dust on your website, then work with you to embed them in your organisation’s culture and ways of working.

  • Happy teams are productive teams. We’ll help you address burnout and retention issues through better work design, aligning goals and values, and strengthening trust throughout your organisation.

  • The four-day work week is gaining traction as organisations explore solutions to burnout and AI’s potential to disrupt workforces. Having designed and run a highly successful four-day week pilot at our previous company, we’ll provide hands-on guidance to help you scope out and run your own.

Who we are

We’re Alex and Joe. Over eight years as co-CEOs of charity digital agency Forward Action, we had the privilege of partnering with nearly 100 nonprofits, all of which do incredible work.

But during that time, we also saw how many progressive organisations were facing deep challenges, caused by the rapid social and technological change going on around them. We founded Modern Change to help them instead unlock the opportunities in this wave of change and build happier, more productive, more impactful organisations.

  • We co-founded Forward Action, a digital campaigning and fundraising agency for nonprofits, and spent eight years running it as co-CEOs. This means we both understand the changing technological landscape and can advise other leaders on how to respond to it.

Our approach to culture and operations was at the heart of how we built a successful organisation, using it to create a zero-toxicity culture, highly productive and motivated teams, and exceptional staff retention rates - 96% in our final 12 months leading the company.
